Welcome to Solargain PV’s dedicated page for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program (CHBP), the national battery rebate valued at ~30% for eligible household battery installations across Australia.
Why It Matters
With rising electricity prices and increased grid instability, storing your solar energy for later use has never been more valuable. A home battery system offers:
- Lower electricity bills by using stored solar instead of purchasing at peak rates.
- Energy independence & backup power, stepping in when the grid goes down.
- Better return on investment when paired with the federal rebate and state-level incentives.
According to recent analysis: the CHBP starts on 1 July 2025 and offers rebates up to ~$372 per usable kWh, or about $4,000 off an average 11.5 kWh system.
What Is the Cheaper Home Batteries Program?
The CHBP is a federal initiative to make home battery storage more affordable, encouraging households, small businesses, and community groups to install new, grid-connected batteries alongside solar PV. Key features include:
- Launch date: 1 July 2025.
- Rebate value: ~30% of the installed cost or ~$344–$372 per usable kWh (based on 2025 STC value) for the first 50 kWh of usable capacity. Solar Choice
- Nationwide eligibility (in all States & Territories) – subject to installation of eligible battery+inverter with solar PV. DCCEEW
- One rebate per electricity meter at a single property.
Eligibility – Are You Qualified?
To be eligible for the rebate, your installation must meet a series of criteria:
Who can claim?
- Homeowners (including landlords/owner-occupiers)
- Small businesses
- Community facilities (sports clubs, schools, libraries). No income test.
What the system must include
- A battery unit (or modular cells forming a single unit) with nominal capacity between 5 kWh and 100 kWh. DCCEEW
- The rebate applies to the first 50 kWh usable capacity only.
- It must be installed with new or existing rooftop solar PV system. Systems purely storing grid energy are not eligible.
- Must use products approved by the Clean Energy Council (CEC) and be installed by an accredited installer (Solar Accreditation Australia-certified).
- For grid-connected systems: the battery + inverter must be VPP-capable (Virtual Power Plant) at installation (not compulsory to enrol in a VPP). DCCEEW

Timing & Other Rules
- Installation (certificate of electrical compliance) must be on or after 1 July 2025.
- Only one rebate per meter/address.
- Additional capacity added to an existing system can be eligible if it hasn’t already claimed the rebate and meets size rules.
How Much Could You Save?
Here’s a snapshot of potential savings and pay-back:
- Rebate rate for 2025: ~9.3 STCs per usable kWh, ~$344 per usable kWh (based on ~$37/STC) for the first 50 kWh.
- Example: A ~11.5 kWh usable system could attract ~$4,000 off.
- Typical bill savings: ~$700–$1,600/year; with solar + battery up to ~$2,300/year in suitable locations. solargain.com.au
- Rebate declines over time (2026–2030), so earlier installation yields higher financial benefit.
