Solar Rebates State by State

Navigating solar rebates in Australia can be overwhelming, especially because every state and territory offers different incentives, loan programs, and energy-efficiency schemes.

Whether you are a homeowner, renter, landlord, or business owner, the support available to you will depend heavily on where you live and what products you are investing in, and knowing what is on offer can help make a significant difference to your upfront installation costs and long-term energy savings.

This guide breaks down the latest solar rebates and incentives state by state, outlining what’s currently available across Australia. From solar panel rebates and battery programs to interest-free loans and federal initiatives like STCs, here is everything you need to know to make an informed decision about going solar, no matter your location.

Solar Power Rebates, State by State

There are many different kinds of rebates available to different people across Australia based on what state or territory they reside in. Here are some of the current solar power rebates available state by state to commercial and residential properties.

Australian Capital Territory (ACT)

The nation’s capital has quite a few solar rebates available to property owners, providing assistance with solar installations and sustainable solutions. Here are some of the current rebates available in the ACT.

The Sustainable Household Scheme

The Sustainable Household Scheme in the ACT offers zero-interest loans ranging from $2,000 to $15,000 to homeowners for energy-efficient solar upgrades, including solar batteries, solar inverters, storage, and various solar electric appliances. The loans have a repayment period of up to 10 years, with no upfront costs. This initiative supports the ACT’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2045, and eligible participants must meet specific criteria and attend a workshop on energy efficiency.

As of 1 July 2025, the Sustainable Household Scheme changed, however. An interest rate of 3% now applies to all new scheme loans, and solar panels are no longer eligible for a loan.

Installations of all approved quotes under the guidelines up to 30 June 2025 must be completed by 1 November 2025, or loans may be reviewed.

For more details about the latest updates, visit the ACT government’s Sustainable Household Scheme website.

The Home Energy Support Program

The Home Energy Support Program in the ACT offers rebates for homeowners to improve their property’s energy efficiency and reduce household emissions. This initiative is designed to make homes more energy-efficient and lower energy costs, particularly in older homes that require retrofitting. Rebates are available for upgrades such as installing efficient heating and cooling systems, insulation, double glazing, and even rooftop solar panels.

For more information, visit the Home Energy Support Rebates for Homeowners website.

Victoria (VIC)

Many Victorian rebates are applicable to both property owners and renters, making multiple sustainable energy solutions accessible to many types of people. Here are some of the current rebates available in VIC.

Solar Panel Rebate

The Victorian Solar Panel Rebate from Solar Victoria offers eligible homeowners up to $1,400 off the cost of installing solar panels (PV). Additionally, interest-free loans are available for the same amount to further reduce upfront costs.

This initiative aims to make solar energy more affordable, lower household energy bills, and reduce carbon emissions across the state. The rebate applies to both owners and occupiers of rental properties as well. More rebates are being released each month.

Visit Solar Victoria’s Solar Panel Rebate website for more information.

Solar Hot Water Rebate

Eligible heat pump and solar hot water products can receive up to $1,000 in rebates from the Victorian state government. Opting for a locally manufactured product may qualify you for a rebate of up to $1,400.

Visit the Solar Victoria Hot Water Rebate page for more details.

The Victorian Energy Upgrades Program (VEU)

The Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program is aimed at helping households and businesses save money on energy bills by providing discounts on installing new energy-efficient products and appliances. The program encourages the electrification of homes and businesses to meet state emissions-reduction targets, offering significant savings and rebates for upgrades such as heating and solar hot water systems. Renters can also receive a discount on a hot water system.

For more details, visit the VEU Program website.

South Australia (SA)

The City of Adelaide offers the Sustainability Incentives Scheme for residents and businesses to encourage environmentally friendly practices and a solar future. These include grants for renewable energy projects, energy-efficient upgrades, and water conservation initiatives.

The program aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable living in the community. For detailed information on eligibility and application processes, you can visit the City of Adelaide website for their Sustainability Incentives Scheme.

New South Wales (NSW)

There are few solar rebates available in NSW to property owners, although there have been some recent changes. On June 30, 2025, the upfront discount component of the NSW Battery Incentive Program under the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS) came to an end, and on July 1, 2025, the state government replaced it with a larger incentive for connecting solar batteries to Virtual Power Plants (VPPs). This modification was made to coincide with the start of the Cheaper Home Batteries Program by the Australian Government, which was announced on the same day.

For more information about the latest NSW updates, visit the NSW Battery Incentive Program page.

Western Australia (WA)

The WA Government has recently rolled out the Residential Battery Scheme, providing both rebates and no-interest loans for solar battery purchases. The scheme aims to support up to 20,000 households, enhancing energy resilience and reducing power bills.

For more information, visit the WA Residential Battery Scheme website.

Queensland (QLD)

The Queensland Government has offered many different solar installation incentives and rebate programs over the years. Most recently, they have provided incentives through Small-scale Technology Certificates, or STCs. Until December 31, 2030, STCs created ahead for the considered amount will be available. As a result, eligible systems will be able to receive fewer certificates as time goes on.

Tasmania (TAS)

Tasmania’s Energy Saver Loan Scheme is now closed. No further applications will be accepted. Consequently, all inactive referrals have ended.

Tasmania’s Energy Saver Loan Scheme offered interest-free loans of up to $10,000 to support households, landlords, small businesses, and not-for-profit organisations in adopting energy-efficient products.

Northern Territory (NT)

The Northern Territory Home and Business Battery Scheme (HBBS) is no longer accepting new applications, having reached its $6 million funding cap.

Australian Federal Rebates Available Nationwide

While there are specific rebates available across the different states and territories in Australia, there are also several federal incentives available to property owners as well. Both state and federal rebates can be applied for simultaneously, so many could stand to save lots of money depending on their circumstances.

If you live in a state or territory where current rebates have expired or been exhausted, then you may want to consider applying for a federal rebate. Here are some of the Australian Government’s solar rebates that are currently available.

The Renewable Energy Target (RET)

The Renewable Energy Target (RET) is the Australian Government’s primary federal incentive for supporting renewable electricity generation on properties and reducing greenhouse gas emissions nationwide. The program is aimed at delivering 33,000 GWh of renewable energy between 2020 and 2030, creating a market that encourages both the production and uptake of renewable power.

The RET operates through two key schemes that issue renewable energy certificates, which in turn help lower the upfront cost of solar and other clean-energy systems.

Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES)

Under the SRES, households and small businesses can receive Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) based on their system’s expected electricity generation. These tradable certificates can be sold to electricity retailers, significantly reducing the upfront cost of installing solar solutions at their commercial or residential properties, like rooftop solar panels, solar batteries, and solar hot water heaters.

Large-scale Renewable Energy Target (LRET)

Similarly, the Large-scale Renewable Energy Target (LRET) supports the development of large-scale renewable power stations. It does so by issuing Large-scale Generation Certificates (LGCs), which are required for commercial solar systems over 100 kW. These certificates create financial incentives for organisations to invest in renewable energy infrastructure such as solar farms and large commercial installations.
