Bipartisan Renewable Energy Target Reached

 

Finally… a deal over Australia’s renewable energy target has been reached.

Nearly two years after the Abbott Government first decided they wanted to reduce the RET, a bipartisan target has been agreed upon.

The renewable energy industry can now move forward with more clarity, certainty and confidence. While many renewable energy companies will agree that so much more can still be done to ensure a successful, sustainable future, a definitive RET provides a more helpful vision of the playing field for businesses and investors alike.

The New RET

After the 2013 election and RET review that soon followed (conducted by well-known climate sceptic, Dick Warburton), the Government originally proposed cutting the target to 26,000 gigawatt hours (from 41,000).

Meanwhile, Labor said that they would not go below a figure of 35,000 gigawatt hours.

A long-running debate ensued, with a deal finally written in stone during recent talks in Melbourne.

Here are the key takeaways from the agreement:

  • Australia’s new RET by 2020 will be 33,000 gigawatt hours
  • The Government has agreed to scrap regular reviews of the scheme
  • Trade-exposed industries are fully exempt from the target

It’s important to note that the very first bipartisan RET was 41,000 gigawatt hours.

So, while the 33,000 figure is considerably higher than the Abbott Government’s proposed 26,000 gigawatt hours, it’s had a hefty chunk taken out of it in comparison with the initial target.

As part of the agreement, the Government has abandoned a proposal to review the target every two years after opposition from the clean energy sector threatened a deal with Labor.

Instead, the Clean Energy Regulator will publish an annual statement showing progress towards the target and any impact on electricity prices.

What does this mean going forward?

While overseas investment in renewables has risen to all-time highs, investment in Australia has stalled.

This new bipartisan deal will hopefully clear the way for influential investment and interest back into Australia’s clean energy industry.

Clean Energy Council Chief Executive Kane Thornton said the deal would unlock up to $10 billion worth of investment, mainly in wind farms and large-scale solar projects.

‘Australia’s potential in renewable energy is massive,’ he said.

‘It’s been a challenging period with all the uncertainty, but with that coming to a close there’s a massive opportunity for Australia.’

The new RET also means that more than 23 per cent of Australia’s power will come from renewable sources in five years, providing some surety for the some 20,000 Australians working in the industry.

Though the solidified target will ensure greater opportunities within the renewable energy sector, ultimately more needs to be done to help Australia keep up with the rest of the world in clean energy stakes.

For now though, this is a (much needed) step in the right direction.

Solar Batteries May Allow Households To Reap Profits from Surplus Energy

The feed-in tariff from excess power generated by solar panels is one of the great incentives for potential solar energy customers.

While solar panel owners are rightly rewarded for the extra energy they send back to the grid, they have little to no control in determining the price of that energy, nor when they decide to share it.

Imagine if you, as a solar owner, were able to pull all the strings – to store surplus solar energy in your own device and to sell it at a profit when demand is high.

Your home would be a practical energy generator, putting you in control of the distribution process while scoring you a pretty penny for your power in the process.

Well, that’s no pie in the sky prospect.

Recently, US electric car company Tesla announced its movement into the home battery storage market, offering re-chargeable lithium-ion battery packs that can store electricity generated from solar panels for later use when the sun isn’t shining.

That same technology will be taken a step further with some help from Australian start-up, Reposit Power. By integrating Reposit’s GridCredits technology, the duo aim to create a new breed of battery that turns households into electricity generators.

Owners would be able to access prices in the wholesale electricity market that can reach as high as $13 per Kilowatt-hour, 200 times the normal feed-in tariff they would expect to receive for the energy the would currently send back to the grid.

Consumers could buy power from the grid when it’s at its cheapest, consume their own solar power throughout the day, and sell back to the markets when prices spike, making a significant dent into (and in some cases potentially eliminating) power bills.

Storage systems could also benefit retailers by helping to modify demand and avoid the need for peaking power stations.

The technology is yet to hit shelves – we’ll be sure to provide you with more information as it becomes available.

UPDATE: Solar Impulse 2 Crosses China

 

In case you missed it, two Swiss pilots took off last month on an around the globe voyage in Solar Impulse 2 – a plane fuelled by nothing other than clean, renewable solar energy.

The momentous journey is a world first, and despite some inclement weather conditions, the team is on track for a successful result.

The sixth leg of the flight is now complete, with Solar Impulse 2 taking a well-earned rest stop in China where it will go through servicing for the next 10 days before preparing for a daunting five-day crossing of the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii.

‘The more I fly, the more energy I have in the batteries,’ Bertrand Piccard​ told Fairfax Media once grounded.

‘The sun is enough to make this fly forever – you never need to refuel, so it's a fantastic feeling.’

Piccard had to complete the sixth leg solo, as co-pilot Andre Borscheberg temporarily headed back to Switzerland for medical check-ups after reporting migraine complaints.

The next leg of the journey over the Pacific, along with the five-day crossing of the Atlantic, is the most difficult leg of the journey. As the plane will fly non-stop, conditions must be absolutely perfect.

But this is what the pilots have trained for, and they’re both ready to meet the challenges that face them head on.

‘Andre uses techniques of yoga, I use the technique of self-hypnosis,’ Piccard said,

‘We trained in a flight simulator and it works very well.’

Support crews are on hand at each stop with a mobile hangar to protect the plane and its 17,248 solar cells that power four 17.4 horse-power propeller engines. In calm conditions, Solar Impulse 2 can fly at 128kms an hour – all with nothing but the energy produced from the sun.

‘The goal is to demonstrate what can be done – what incredible things can be done – with renewable energy and clean technologies,’ Piccard said. ‘This is what drives us.’

The global journey is planned to just over five months, starting and finishing in the sun-scorched deserts of Abu Dhabi.

Solar Panels

The three most popular solar panels in Australia are Polycrystalline/Multicrystalline, Monocrystalline and Quasi-Monocrystalline.

While choosing the right solar panel type has importance, the quality and reliability of the manufacturer is, and will always be, the most important consideration.

Manufacturers are categorised into three tiers. When choosing solar panels, we always recommend choosing Tier 1 or 2 manufacturers.

Solar Inverters

Solar inverters are the engine room of your solar energy system. The most important things to look for here are:

Efficiency – don’t accept an efficiency rating of less than 95%. Keep an eye out for unrealistic claims from manufacturers and instead try to find independent testing when comparing models.

Brand – just like panels, ‘brandless’ inverters are out there and usually offer poor quality. Stick to brands with a proven reputation like SMA, Fronius and Growatt.

Warranty – solar energy systems are a long term investment. Make sure your preferred inverter is locally supported (there are offices representing the brand in Australian), and don’t accept a warranty of less than five years.

Mounting Systems

Mounting systems hold and protect your solar panels over a long period, so it’s essential you look for a strong and robust system that will go the distance. Ensure your mounting system is Australian-certified and protected by a competitive warranty.

Which System Is Best For You?

Now that you know which components to look out for, the next step in choosing solar panels is determining the size and output of your system. Here are three questions that you should consider when making your choice.

How much energy do you need?

Consider your current energy requirements, the size of your house, future energy needs and exactly how much energy you want to be saving every day.

Whilst the misinformation regarding solar can sometimes muddy the waters, you can rest assured that solar is here to stay and there’s still plenty of reasons to get on board.

Up-Front Savings - STCs

Most residential solar owners can continue to take advantage of a rebate (or STCs – Small Scale Technology Certificates) when purchasing solar panels.

The STC can be sold following installation to offset the cost of your system.

Alternatively, you can receive an upfront discount at the point of purchase through retailers such as Solargain. This government incentive affects the one-off price of purchasing your solar panels, and depending on your state, it can save you thousands. Feed-in Tariffs

Feed-in tariffs pay you, the solar power owner, for electricity generated and fed back into the grid. As you can see in the graph below, the minimum feed-in tariff varies from state to state. Whilst electricity retailers cannot reimburse you for less than the figures stated below, they can opt to pay you at a higher rate.

When considering feed-in tariffs, our tip is to do your research before committing to an electricity provider. It’s a good idea to shop around to ensure you’re getting the best tariff price. Some retailers offer additional incentives over and above the legislated amount for solar power owners.

Around the World in… Nothing But Solar

The true power of solar energy never ceases to amaze us here at Solargain.

And its seemingly limitless potential is about to be witnessed on a global scale with two Swiss pilots attempting the first flight around the world in a solar-powered plane.

That’s right, the plane will soar over the entire circumference of planet Earth over five historic months on nothing but clean, sustainable, renewable solar energy – not a drop of fuel needed here.

Solar Impulse 2 is the state-of-the-art solar-powered plane in question. The plane is ultra-light (no heavier than a standard family car) largely due to a carbon fibre construct. Its wingspan, however, is as wide as the largest passenger airline (at 72m) and features more than 17,000 solar cells!

Solar Impulse 2, which took 12 years to develop, took off from Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates on Monday 9 March with the aim off completing the voyage in the Omani capital of Muscat.

Mission pilot, Bertrand Piccard, hopes to boost public enthusiasm for renewable energy sources and technologies that reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

‘Miracles can be achieved with renewables such as solar power,’ said Piccard.

‘We want to show that we can fly day and night in an aircraft without a drop of fuel.’

The journey will be arduous for Piccard and co-pilot Andre Borscheberg. The pilots will only be able to sleep for 20 minutes at a time before having to check the plane’s instruments.

Not to mention a rather small cabin size that fluctuates in temperatures in an instant – this isn’t a ride for the claustrophobic.

So, how and what do the pilots eat inside such a cosy cabin?

None other than Nestlé has developed high-tech airline food to fuel the pilots on their record-breaking trip.

The company has been working with the Swiss duo for the last four years to create nutrient-dense food that’s healthy, tasty and suitably packaged.

‘The plane has no fuel but the pilots have to sustain themselves, and this is what we’re best at,’ said Stefan Catsicas, Nestlé’s Chief Technology Officer.

‘The first and uttermost priority is to support the pilots… and to find a diet that would sustain them from an energy point of view, and at the same time would taste well.’

A variety of specially designed meals have been provided along with Nestlé water and Nestle coffee – a whole lot of coffee, we’re tipping.

Bowser Boom – But What Does It Mean For Solar?

The price of oil has tumbled to a five-year low. But how does this impact the solar power industry?

First, let’s barrel in to the background behind cheaper oil.

Why is oil so cheap?

Australia’s plummeting oil prices have coincided (of course) with global oil prices.

Between 2010 and mid-2014 world oil prices consistently sat around $110 a barrel. In recent times, however, Brent Crude and U.S. oil have fallen below $50 a barrel.

There are two main factors driving the price dip – oversupply and increased competition. Oil production levels in the U.S. are the highest they’ve been in 30 years, mostly due to the extraction process of fracking (which has enabled a major increase in productivity). Meanwhile, there’s been decreased demand from oil importers China, Japan and the European Union all of which have experienced a weakness in their economies.

Instead of cutting production to create demand, Saudi Arabia oil cartel OPEC is showing no signs of slowing down in order to push out competition.

Where does that leave solar?

A significant price drop to one form of energy inevitably impacts other energy industries. To give you an idea of the shift felt by investors: In America, First Solar was trading near $72 in mid-September; now it's around $44. Solar City was around $65; now it's close to $50. 

Some solar investors have turned cautious, fearing that cheap oil will erase the demand for alternative energy. Will it, though?

The facts are that oil and solar serve two different customers. Not to mention the growing demand for solar power and renewable energy across many countries.

Whilst oil dominates energy demand in transportation fuels, solar power customers are primarily of two types: public electric utilities and large corporations. Neither of those use oil to generate electricity, and they are not about to start.

Industry analysts are also confident that even with lower oil prices, cheaper materials have still made solar far more practical. Plus, solar panels are inexpensive to maintain and once installed draw upon a free and unlimited energy source – sunlight.

Oil may be cheap, but there’s currently little available infrastructure to convert it to power.

So, solar’s future is still looking bright?

Absolutely! Demand for solar is rising around the world and new technologies and increased competition will continue to drive down costs. Corporate solar customers are fuelling growth. And as policy continues to bend in the favour of renewable energy, many states (particularly in the U.S.) will mandate a significant portion of electricity is obtained from renewable sources.

Fill up on cheap fuel while you can. But make no mistake; solar is in this one for the long haul.

Can you believe it? 2014 is almost over and what a year it’s been.

As the year comes to an exciting climax, there’s no better time to reflect on the achievements of the last twelve months. But first, we’d like to thank each and every one of our customers – you’ve all played a huge role in spreading the sunny word about solar throughout Australia.

With your help, Solargain has now completed over 38,700 solar power installations – a figure we’re so proud of (as you should be too!).

Speaking of spreading the word, Solargain has also spread its wings, establishing a shiny new Network Distribution Centre in Wangaratta as well as the recent launch of our Sydney operations. After many months of careful planning and research, we’re thrilled to be able to cater for the solar power, solar panel and solar hot water needs of residents in these areas.

In other major milestones, as of October (and for the first time ever) customers installing Solargain’s super-efficient hot water systems could proclaim ‘I got it at Kambo’s!’

Our dynamic partnership with Kambo’s allowed for the well-known household consumer appliances network to sell our leading range of solar products – a match made in heaven! As part of our passion for contributing to sustainability and the environment, we buddied up with our friends at Carbon Neutral this year, and have been able to green-up the Australian landscape in a big way.

In partnership with Carbon Neutral, Solargain has now contributed to the establishment of 360 native trees and shrubs through the Turn Emissions into Trees Program.

To help drive a reduction in the planet’s carbon emissions, Solargain planted one tree for every 100kW of solar installed across our entire Australian network during 2013-14.
